• The earliest construction in the village of Oxford that we know about was a cabin built by Daniel Boone and William Bryan on Miller’s Run in 1775
  • The community was known variously in early days as Patterson’s Crossroads, Barkley’s Cross Roads, Marion Cross Roads, and Marion. Finally, in 1849, it changed its name to Oxford, after the post office swapped names with Oxford in Crittendon County
  • The Disciples of Christ (Christian Church) denomination goes back to the Stone-Campbell Movement, which started in the 19th century as two similar but distinct movements
  • In 1801, the Cane Ridge Revival started a movement led by Barton W. Stone in Kentucky and Ohio for all Christians to worship together like the early followers of Christ
  • The Stone and Campbell movements came together in Lexington in 1831 with a handshake between Barton W. Stone and "Raccoon" John Smith. Their new name, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), combined the names of the old movements
  • That same year, 1831, our congregation was founded near our current location by John T. Johnson. (John’s brother Richard was later Vice President of the United States.)
  • In 1847 a wooden church was built under the supervision of John A. Gano, Sr., and “Racoon” John Smith. The original membership was about 100. By that time the village of Oxford had 50 people, two churches, a school, a doctor, a grocery, a tavern, a paper and flour mill, and five mechanical trades
  • Our current sanctuary was built in 1901 as a one-room brick church. The total cost was $1762. The stained-glass windows cost $225
  • In 1960 a brick Sunday School room was added  with a basement for community events
  • In 1968 the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) adopted a denominational structure
  • In 1977 we added interior rooms for classes and offices
  • In 2008, the Family Life Center was completed
  • In 2013 the basement was converted to the Garnett Center for Children’s Worship and Wonder
  • In 2025 the Kay Wiseman Drive and sign were dedicated

Ephesians chapter 2 verses 19-21: “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.”
